How can I access help from outside school?
There are a number of excellent websites which provide information and resources that can help you in school, for example www.youngminds.org.uk, for help with low feelings, www.b-eat.co.uk for help with eating disorders, and www.childline.org for help with a range of issues from dealing with divorce to bullying. I am worried about a particular child or young person – what should I do?
It is important to make your concerns known through the pastoral system in your school – the relevant procedure should be made clear in your school’s safeguarding policy (sometimes called the child protection policy) – make sure you have read this. If you are unsure, have a look at the section on this website that deals with common behaviours that can be present in children and young people with mental health issues.
What can I do to improve the emotional wellbeing of children or young people in my school?
The National Healthy Schools Scheme recommends that the key to improving wellbeing is through a co-ordinated commitment throughout your school. An effective approach combines a high status for emotional issues, for example through SEAL for all students, as well as a clear and well understood system to support children and young people with particular needs. Regular training for school staff as well as close working with parents and clear leadership are elements of an emotionally healthy school, see the document Guidance for Schools on Developing Emotional Health and Wellbeing for detailed guidance of how to take a successful whole school approach in your school.
